How to Wash HOKA Shoes

July 13, 2024

HOKA is a sportswear company that offers running shoes and other sports equipment. Founded in 2009 by two former Salomon employees, the brand became known for their oversized outsoles, which provided wearers with more cushioning and comfort than its competitors at the time.

Due to their stability and enhanced cushion, their shoes quickly became popular among ultramarathon runners. Not long afterward, they also gained traction among the amateur running community.

Four years after its launch, the company was acquired by Decker Brands, the parent company for Teva, UGG, and several other footwear brands.

HOKA Footwear Collection

HOKA offers a variety of shoes, including those for road running, trail running, walking, hiking, and training, many of which come with a waterproof finish. In addition to that, they also sell orthopedic shoes as well as sandals.

They also have specific models that are designed for stability, recovery, and wide feet.

Some of their best sellers include the Clifton 9, Bondi 8, Arahi 7 and Mach 6, all of which come with a cushioned midsole for stability and comfort.

What Materials are HOKA Shoes Made of?

Their running shoes are made from different shoe materials, each of which contributes to the shoes’ overall performance.

Recycled Polyester

Recycled polyester is made from post-consumer plastic waste such as plastic bottles and fishnets. Not only does it divert waste from landfills but it also offers the same quality as virgin polyester. For one thing, it’s durable and resistant to moisture.

Most HOKA running shoes come with a 40% recycled polyester eyestay lining, 87% recycled polyester strobel board, and 100% recycled polyester sockliner top cloth.

Ortholite® Hybrid

Ortholite Hybrid is a lightweight, resilient foam that they use for their sockliners. The material combines recycled rubber with waste foam and provides maximum cushioning and performance.

GORETEX Footwear Fabric

GORETEX is a fully waterproof material that they use for their GTX footwear. Not only is it safe from the rain but it’s also windproof and breathable so your feet will stay comfortable and dry all the time.

The only drawback is that it does require regular maintenance if you want to take advantage of its full waterproof benefits.

How to Wash HOKA Running Shoes the Right Way

There are two ways to wash HOKA running shoes, which we will be going over in detail below.

Hand Washing Your Running Shoes

HOKA recommends that you hand wash their running shoes with cold water and detergent. Here’s how.

Step 1: Prepare the Shoes

hoka insoles

Start by dissembling the shoes. This means removing the insoles, liners, and laces and washing them separately.

If you want, you can even wash them with your workout clothes in the machine. Just place them in a mesh laundry bag or sock so that they won’t get tangled or lost.

Step 2: Remove Surface Dirt

paper towel

Using a dry paper towel or old toothbrush, remove any dirt or mud from the outer surface of the shoe. If there’s caked-on mud, you may want to let the areas dry before wiping with a clean cloth (dry mud will come off much more easily).

Step 3: Create a Detergent Solution

active detergent

In a small bowl, combine a bit of ACTIVE laundry detergent with cool or warm water to create a cleaning solution.

Step 4: Apply the Detergent Mixture

toothbrush

Using the old toothbrush, gently work it into the dirty areas of the shoe – it should get sudsy. Continue until the dirt is gone, wiping away the remaining soap lather with a clean cloth as you go.

Step 5: Let the Shoes Dry

Blot the wet shoes with a dry towel until they’re somewhat dry and stuff the insides with newspaper – that will help speed up the drying process.

For the best results, let them air dry in a well-ventilated space.

Can You Put HOKA Running Shoes in the Washing Machine?

Machine washing is not the best option as the agitation can cause them to wear out prematurely.

How to Machine Wash HOKA Running Shoes

While machine washing is not as gentle as washing by hand, you can use the washer in a pinch – you just have to be extra careful and try not to do it too often.

Supplies:

  • Laundry bags
  • Old toothbrush
  • ACTIVE Detergent
  • Towels

Step 1:

As with hand washing, you want to first take out the insoles, liners, and laces.

If you have an extra laundry bag, you can toss them in and run them through the washer with your shoes.

Otherwise, you can wash them by hand in the sink with some detergent.

Step 2:

Using an old toothbrush, remove as much dirt and mud as possible from the surface. You can also clap the shoes together to dislodge mud from the soles.

Step 3:

Place each running shoe into a large mesh laundry bag, close it all the way, and toss it into the tub.

To prevent the shoes from banging around during the wash cycle, we recommend adding a few bath towels to help even out the load.

Step 4:

Add one scoop of ACTIVE Detergent powder directly to the wash tub or detergent dispenser and run a cold washing cycle on a delicate or gentle setting.

Do not use hot water and avoid using the normal wash setting as the agitation will age the shoes quickly.

Step 5:

Take them out once the cycle is finished and let them air dry indoors.

You can stuff some newsprint into each shoe to hasten the drying process. Remember not to leave the shoes outdoors in the sun.
