Best Ways to Wash Crocs Shoes

Crocs is a footwear company that mainly sells foam clog shoes. Made of closed-cell resin, they are known for being lightweight, soft, and comfortable. As far as their other products go, they also offer boots, sandals, sneakers, loafers, and flip-flops.

Crocs was founded by Lyndon Hanson and George Boedecker Jr. in 2002. By the mid-2000s, they were earning over $200 million a year, having scored several licensing deals.
Eventually, they secured the rights to their proprietary form resin—the material that they use for their trademark clogs. Since then, they have opened dozens of stores in nearly 40 different countries worldwide. What’s more, is that they have sold more than 600 million pairs of shoes!
Aside from their official stores, you can also find their shoes at other retailers such as Walmart, Macy, Kohl’s, and Amazon.
As we said earlier, Crocs offers various types of shoes from sandals to boots. For this post, however, we’ll be focusing on their foam clogs, which also happen to be their most popular product.
One thing that sets them apart from other similar shoes is that you can customize them with various charms. If anything, that’s one of the reasons why they’re so popular among children.
They’re also affordable, especially if you manage to get them on sale. For instance, you can easily snag a pair of foam clogs for under $50 (children’s clogs are cheaper than adult clogs). Keep in mind, however, that some of their other styles are more expensive.
Taking Care of Crocs
The resin material that the shoes are made of is durable but that doesn’t mean that it won’t attract dirt and mud, because it will. Sweat is another issue—this is especially true if you have a habit of wearing your Crocs without socks (whether or not you should is a whole different issue). Why? The sweat from your feet will come into direct contact with the foam material. As it is, this can cause noticeable odors over time.
Fortunately, it’s not a major problem since you can wash Crocs easily with soap and water. Having said that, there are a few things that you want to be careful with when it comes to these clogs and we’ll be outlining them below. For now, though, let’s take a closer look at the resin material.
What is Crocs Croslite Material?
Their trademark clogs as well as many of their other shoes are made of Croslite material. A type of closed-cell resin, it is not rubber nor plastic, despite how it feels. Not only is it able to absorb impacts, but it also offers maximum cushioning. That’s not all, the material is also resistant to fungal growth. Non-toxic, the material does not contain any latex.

How to Wash Crocs Shoes
Crocs don’t have to be washed all that often. With that said, it’s a good idea to give them a clean every once in a while, especially if you’ve been walking around in the mud.
Washing Dirty Crocs by Hand
Croc shoes are super easy to clean, just follow these steps.
1. Wet Your Crocs
Fill a container or sink with cool water and place your Crocs in. Avoid using hot water as it can cause the resin material to shrink, which can affect its fit. You can also hold the Crocs under running water – that will help to remove any loose dirt and debris from the surface.
2. Create a Soapy Solution
Add half a scoop of ACTIVE Detergent to the sink or bucket that you’re using. Mix the powder well so that it dissolves completely before dunking your Crocs into the soapy water.
3. Gently Scrub the Crocs and Soak For 15 Minutes
Gently scrub the Crocs with a soft brush for a couple of minutes, paying attention to the soiled areas. Allow them to soak in the soapy mixture afterward for 15 minutes.
4. Rinse the Crocs With Water and Allow Them to Dry
Rinse the Crocs with water from the tap. Make sure there are no more soap suds before drying them completely with a paper towel.
Alternatively, you can let them air dry in a well-ventilated room. Avoid leaving them out in direct sunlight as the UV rays and heat can compromise the Croslite material.

How to Machine Wash Your Crocs
Generally speaking, it’s not recommended that you put your Crocs in the washing machine. With that said, some people have had success with this method—just make sure that you don’t wash them with your clothes.
Leather Crocs are an exception. They should never be put in the washing machine. Not only will the water cause the leather to shrink but the agitator will also damage the shoes, causing them to wear out prematurely.
Supplies

- A few towels
Step 1
Brush off any dirt and place the Crocs in the washing machine. To balance the weight, add a few towels; that will prevent them from getting thrown around during the cycle.
Step 2
Add one scoop of ACTIVE Detergent directly to the drum or to the detergent drawer, and run a gentle cycle with cold water.
Step 3
Remove the Crocs once the wash cycle is finished and let them air dry in a well-ventilated room. Do not expose them to direct sunlight. Do not use the dryer.
How to Clean Fuzzy Crocs
Crocs also sells fuzzy clogs that come with a warm, sheepskin-like liner for additional warmth – and they can be washed easily, just like regular Crocs.
Machine Washing Fuzzy Crocs
Their fuzzy Crocs are machine washable so you can wash them quickly and effectively.
Supplies
- ACTIVE detergent
- Mesh laundry bag
- Soft-brlstled brush
Step 1:
Using a brush, remove any excess dirt that’s on the surface of the shoe.
Step 2:
Place the fuzzy Crocs in a mesh laundry bag. It will keep them together and prevent them from being damaged during the wash cycle.
Step 3:
Add one scoop of ACTIVE Detergent and run a delicate cycle with cold water.
Step 4:
Take the fuzzy Crocs out of the washing machine as soon as the cycle is finished and place them on a flat surface to air dry.
Washing Fuzzy Crocs By Hand
You can also wash the fuzzy Crocs by hand if you don’t feel like running the washing machine.
Supplies
- ACTIVE detergent
- A large sink or container
Step 1:
Create a soapy solution by filling a large sink or container with lukewarm water and adding a bit of ACTIVE Detergent.
You can help the powder dissolve by swishing the water with your hands.
Step 2:
Place the fuzzy Crocs in the sink or container and swish them around so that the fabric is completely saturated with the solution.
Step 3:
Soak the fuzzy Crocs for 15 to 20 minutes; that will get rid of any sweat or dirt that’s embedded in the liner. You can also scrub the liner with a soft-bristled brush.
Step 4:
Rinse the fuzzy Crocs under running water. Continue to rinse until there are no more soap suds. Allow them to air dry afterward.
Best Way to Deodorize and Clean Crocs Shoes
While Crocs are made from an anti-microbial material, they can still possibly retain odors over time. Fortunately, there are ways to deodorize them so that they’ll smell fresh again.
Deodorizing Using Baking Soda
Baking soda is cheap and highly effective at neutralizing odors.
Supplies
- Baking soda
- A large plastic bag
- Freezer
Step 1:
Pour a generous amount of baking soda into each Croc – the bottom should be completely covered with powder.
Step 2:
Lay the shoes flat inside the plastic bag. Make sure the bag is sealed so that the powder won’t spill out.
Step 3:
Transfer the bag to the freezer and keep it in there overnight. Shake out the baking soda the next morning.
Using Baking Soda with Vinegar
For extra deodorizing power, you can use baking soda with white vinegar.
Supplies
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- A large tub of cool water
Step 1:
Mix three parts white vinegar to one part baking soda in a small bowl. You should end up with a thick paste.
Step 2:
Using your finger, apply the paste to the inside of the Crocs. Let it sit on the surface for a few minutes before soaking and rinsing the shoes with cool water.

Can you wash leather Crocs?
Leather crocs should never be machine washed or put in the dryer (the extreme heat will permanently damage the leather). Consider wiping the outside with a damp cloth instead.
