The Best Way to Wash IVY PARK Activewear Clothing

June 15, 2019

Ivy Park is an activewear brand that’s co-founded by pop sensation, Beyonce and fashion retailer, Topshop. Introduced in 2016, the joint venture operates under the banner, Parkwood Topshop Athletic Ltd. As far as products go, they sell a variety of clothes including tops, bottoms, and swimwear. On top of that, they also produce accessories such as hats and bags.

Ivy Park’s Recent Partnership with Adidas

Earlier this year, it was announced that the singer would be partnering up with Adidas. As a result, the brand would be severing its ties with Topshop. According to a statement released on the official website, the new relaunch will aim to put out performance gear, footwear, and lifestyle apparel. As far as we can tell, though, it’s still a work in progress.

More About Ivy Park Activewear

Ivy Park sells a wide array of activewear, all of which are in the $30 to $100 range. In addition to leggings, their catalog also includes joggers, hooded jackets, shorts, tees, sweatshirts, sports bras, and more.

While their official website is currently down (for their relaunch), their apparel can still be found at other retailers such as Nordstrom. For now, it’s unknown when they will be pulling their old products.

Taking Care of Ivy Park Activewear

Ivy Park is known for their high-quality activewear. In other words, all of their products, from their sports bras to leggings, are meant to last. If anything, the brand’s quality has earned themselves quite a reputation over the past few years.

With rigorous wear, however, they will eventually wear out. After all, fabric is fabric; it’s only natural that the fibers will deteriorate over time, especially if you wash them regularly. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t wash them, though—you definitely should. Too much sweat can easily lead to bacteria buildup, which is bad for several reasons. For one thing, it’s smelly; it’s also bad for your skin.

Synthetic Fabrics Used by Ivy Park

Before we explain how to wash their clothing, however, let’s find out what types of materials they use for their sportswear. After all, it dictates how a garment should be washed!

Polyester

Polyester is known for its exceptional strength. More durable than other fabrics, it is resistant to most things including chemicals, shrinking, wrinkles, and stretching. Highly affordable, it is often used for sportswear due to its moisture-wicking properties.

Ivy Park uses polyester in their leggings, sports bras, tank tops, jackets, shorts, and more.

Elastane

Elastane (also referred to as Spandex) is unique in that it can be stretched several times its length. What this means is that it offers a high degree of comfort. Not only that, but it allows for great freedom of movement. Typically, the fiber is combined with other types of material such as polyester or cotton.

Ivy Park uses elastane in their leggings, crop tops, and sports bras.

Polyamide

Polyamide, aka Nylon, is similar to polyester in that it also consists of polymers. Compared to the latter, though, it is much more absorbent. On top of that, the fibers tend to be softer and more flexible. Having said that, both fabrics are used similarly in athletic apparel.

Ivy Park uses polyamide in their leggings, and crop tops.

Viscose

Viscose is incredibly versatile—it blends very well with other materials. Lightweight and breathable, the fabric is ideal for sportswear. However, it is also used for dresses, jackets, coats, and other outerwear. Semi-synthetic, the fibers are made from plant-based cellulose.

Ivy Park uses viscose in their leggings, tops and more.

Washing Instructions for Ivy Park Leggings/Yoga Pants/Tights

Now that we know more about their fabrics, let’s take a look at how to wash their leggings. Don’t worry, the instructions are not complicated at all. If anything, the washing process is rather straightforward.

Putting Your Ivy Park Leggings in the Washing Machine

Ivy Park leggings are machine washable. With that said, there are certain things that you want to do to ensure that they’ll last. First things first, you want to flip the material inside out. As you can imagine, that will prevent the outside from getting damaged by friction. Not only that, but it will give the detergent better access to the inner layer, which tends to be more sweaty.

Once you’ve done that, place the leggings in a laundry bag—that will prevent them from getting snagged on your other clothes (this is especially important if there are bits of mesh on your leggings). Close the zipper and put it in the washing machine. For those who are wondering, yes, you can wash Ivy Park leggings with other garments (just make sure to separate everything based on their color).

Pro-tip:  Don’t have a laundry bag? You can improvise with a pillowcase—simply put your bottoms in and tie off on end. That will prevent them from being damaged in the wash.

Add one scoop of ACTIVE detergent to the dispenser and close the door. Choose a gentle, cold water cycle and press start—it’s important that you do not use hot water as the high temperature can distort the leggings.

Note: Resist the urge to use fabric conditioners. Ultimately, how these products work is that they soften your clothes by coating them in a waxy substance. While this might make them feel better, it will affect the material’s ability to pull sweat from the skin. In other words, there’s a greater chance that you’d feel clammy at the gym!

Wait for the wash cycle to finish completely before removing the laundry bags. Take your leggings out and let them air dry at room temperature (a clothesline works well). Whatever you do, do not tumble dry. As mentioned earlier, the fabric is prone to heat damage.

Washing Your Ivy Park Leggings by Hand

Don’t want to use your washing machine for just a couple of leggings? Consider washing them in the sink! Here’s how.

Fill the sink with cool water (you can also use a bucket or container if you want). Create a soapy mixture by dissolving one scoop of ACTIVE detergent—you might have to swirl the liquid a few times with your hand. Place your Ivy Park leggings in once it’s thoroughly mixed. Allow it to soak for 15 to 20 minutes before washing.

Note: You can hand wash multiple pairs at a time, but it’s probably a good idea to separate them by color (as you would with machine washing).

Knead the leggings in the soapy water a few times before massaging the fabric with your hands. When you’re finished, rinse off the soap—make sure that there are no leftovers on the fabric, otherwise, it can cause skin irritation. Gently squeeze out the excess water (do not wring or twist the fabric) before placing it on a clean towel. Roll it up to further remove moisture before hanging it up to dry.

Note: Ivy Park shorts and tops can be washed in the same as their leggings.

How to Wash Ivy Park Sports Bras

Ivy Park offers a wide range of sports bras for women. As with their leggings, there are two ways to wash them—either by using the washer or by hand.

Putting Your Ivy Park Sports Bras in the Washing Machine

Before you do anything, check to see if your sports bra has removable pads. If that’s the case, you want to take them out before putting the item in the wash. Why? It’s much easier to wash them separately (you can put them in their own laundry bag). Not only would they get a more thorough cleaning, but they’ll also dry faster.

Next, place your Ivy Park sports bra in a lingerie bag. Remember, these types of garments are considered to be delicate—you want to do whatever you can to protect them from damage. While you can wash them with other clothes, it’s probably best not to put them in the same load as heavy and coarse items such as jeans.

Add a scoopful of ACTIVE detergent to the washer. From there, choose a delicate cycle from the settings. Make sure to use cold water only; hot water can loosen the elastic and fabric over time, which would defeat the purpose of having a sports bra. Pass on the fabric softener. Consider pouring a bit of white vinegar onto the wash load instead—believe it or not but the condiment is a great softening agent!

Wait for the washing machine to finish the cycle. Remove the lingerie bags from the washer and take out your sports bras. Let them air dry at room temperature; do not tumble dry.

Washing Ivy Park Sports Bras by Hand

Using the washer is convenient, however, it can damage your sports bras over time. Consider washing them by hand if you want to be more gentle with them.

Start by filling a bucket (you can also use the sink) with cool water. Add a scoop of ACTIVE detergent to create a soapy mixture—just water won’t do you any good, after all! Place the sports bras in and let them soak for 15 to 20 minutes. You can wash several of them at once as long as they’re of like-colors.

Note: Consider washing the pads separately if they’re removable.

Swirl the sports bra in the soapy water a few times. From there, rub the material gently with your hands. When you’re finished, rinse off the detergent by placing the item under the faucet. If you want, you can also soak it in a bucket of clean water. Ensure that there is no detergent residue on the bra before transferring it to a flat surface.

Lightly squeeze out the extra water from the bra—avoid twisting the item as that can damage the elastic. Use a towel to blot away some of the moisture before allowing it to air dry. Do not place the bra under direct sunlight.

How to Safely Clean Ivy Park Swimwear

As far as swimwear goes, you always want to wash it as soon as possible. Don’t leave it sitting as the chlorine and salts can damage the fabric.

Start with a sink filled with cold water. Add in a scoop of ACTIVE detergent and a little bit of white vinegar (the latter will help neutralize any odors). Place your swimsuit in the mixture and let it soak for up to 30 minutes.

From there, take it out and rinse it clean with water. Never wring or twist the swimsuit—the materials are delicate! To dry, roll it in a clean towel while pressing down lightly. Afterwards, allow it to air dry at room temperature (avoid hangers as they can distort the shape of the suit). Never put your swimsuit in the dryer—unless you want to buy a new one!
