How to Wash Superdry Jackets and Leggings

March 30, 2022

Superdry is a UK-based clothing company that’s known for their fusion of Americana and Japanese inspired graphics. Aside from apparel, they also sell bags, footwear, and accessories such as beanies, wallets, sunglasses, scarfs, gloves, and more.

More About Superdry

Superdry was founded by Julian Dunkerton and James Holder in 2003. The following year, they opened their first retail store in London. Over the years, they’ve been endorsed by many celebrities including David Beckham and Idris Elba.

Since then, they’ve gained a significant presence around the world with over 760 locations in 65 countries. Aside from their own shops, they also have franchised and licensed stores. On top of that, they operate 21 international websites that ship to over 100 countries worldwide.

What Kind of Activewear Do They Sell?

Superdry sells a variety of sportswear including jackets, hoodies, trousers, tees, shorts, waterproof shells, sweatshirts, leggings, and more. They also have their own swimwear line which consists of swimsuits, bikinis, swim shorts, and board shorts.

As far as price goes, their products are marked fairly competitively. For instance, you can get a hoodie, sweatshirt, or pair of trousers for under $100. With that said, some of their items such as their jackets do have higher price tags. At the end of the day, it depends on what you’re getting. Nonetheless, you do get free delivery and free returns on all orders.

Caring For Your Superdry Activewear

Superdry activewear is known for its durability so you should be able to wear it for a long time. Keep in mind, however, that that only applies if you care for the garments. After all, even the most durable clothing will wear down without proper care.

Take their leggings and sports bras, for example, they should both be washed after each wear (assuming that you’ve exercised in them). Why? Because otherwise, the sweat will remain on the item, which can compromise the fabric.

As it turns out, there’s a certain way to wash them as well. Want to know how to do it? Then make sure to read until the end of the post!

Fabrics Used by Superdry

What kind of materials do they use for their activewear? We’ll be going over them below. That way, you’ll have a better understanding of their products.

Polyester is a type of synthetic fabric that’s revived from petroleum. Strong and robust, it’s often used for various types of clothing including activewear—one of the reasons being that it has moisture-wicking abilities. That is, it’s capable of pulling sweat to the fabric’s outer surface. In doing so, your sweat won’t stay on your skin.

Superdry uses polyester for their track jackets, leggings, sports bras, bikini tops, swimsuits, and more.

Elastane also goes by the names spandex and Lycra. Despite the different spellings, they all refer to the same elastic fiber. Manmade, it can be stretched up to 7 times its length without breaking. In fact, it’s even stronger than rubber. However, it’s rarely used by itself; it’s often blended with other fabrics such as cotton and nylon.

Superdry uses elastane for their sports bras, leggings, swimsuits, bikini tops, and more.

Polyamide is an umbrella term that includes nylon. Similar to elastane and polyester, it’s also made of synthetic polymers. Soft like silk, it’s resistant to many things including water, chemicals, and abrasion. While it’s not as stretchy as spandex per se, it does have great flexibility.

Superdry uses polyamide for their swimsuits, bikini tops, jackets, and more.

Modal is a semi-synthetic fabric that’s derived from tree pulp. While it’s not as durable as other materials, it does have a few pros. For one thing, it’s exceptionally absorbent; its texture is also silky smooth, which makes it suitable for a variety of clothes. Blended with other fabrics, it can also improve their texture.

Superdry uses modal for their hoodies, sweatshirts, and more.

How to Wash Superdry Leggings the Right Way

Option 1: Run Your Superdry Leggings Through the Washer

Start by checking the pockets (if your leggings have them). Remember, anything that’s left inside will be washed along with the pants! Once you’ve checked that they’re empty, flip the leggings inside out. This will help protect the outer surface of the fabric from the friction that comes with machine washing.

Open the machine door and load the garment bag in. Add the other clothes that you’re washing and select a gentle cold water cycle. For detergent, we recommend one scoop of ACTIVE detergent (you can add more powder if you’re washing several things with your leggings). Do not use chlorine bleach. Same with fabric softener—they’ll ruin the fabric by covering it with a wax-like compound.

Start the wash cycle once you’ve set all the settings. Wait for the machine to come to a complete stop before retrieving your garment bag. Remove the leggings and flip them right-side out. Hang them on a rack and let them air dry in a well-ventilated room. Avoid sunlight as the rays can cause the material to disintegrate over time. Do not tumble dry.

Option 2: Hand Washing Your Superdry Leggings

Hand washing your leggings is always a good idea as it’s gentler on the fabric. While it might take more effort, you can always wash more than one item at once to save some time.

Step one—remove everything from the pockets. From there, turn the item inside out so that the outer fabric is on the inside. Next, you want to prepare your bath. Fill a medium-sized basin or sink with cool or tepid water and mix in half a scoop of ACTIVE detergent. There should be lots of bubbles once the detergent is dissolved.

Soak the leggings by immersing them in the soapy water. Massage the fabric gently to remove any oils or sweat. Afterward, let it sit in the sink; you want to give the ACTIVE detergent time to penetrate into the fibers. About 15-20 minutes should do.

Use clean water to rinse the leggings thoroughly after soaking. Continue to clean and rinse until there are no more soap bubbles coming from the fabric. You’ll probably have to squeeze some of them out of the material with your hands. You’ll know they’re clean once the water becomes clear.

Before you hang up the leggings, press out the excess water with your hand. You can even use a towel to blot it up. For the best results, let it air dry indoors in a well-ventilated room, where it’s not exposed to the sun. Direct heat such as the dryer should be avoided.

Washing Superdry Gym Jackets

Option 1: Machine Washing Your Superdry Gym Jackets

Tip: Always read the tag. In some cases, there will be specific washing instructions. For example, some items may be dry-clean only.

If your jacket has stains, it’s best to spot treat them before putting them in the washer. That way, they’ll come out much easier. The next step is to zip up the jacket; you don’t want the zipper to get stuck on other garments during the cycle. The same thing goes for any zippered pockets—make sure that they’re closed and empty.

Place the jacket in the washing machine. If you want, you can wash them with other jackets of the same time; just don’t mix different materials. Put in one scoop of ACTIVE detergent and skip the fabric softener. Do not add any bleach. Wash on a delicate wash cycle to prevent damage. While it depends on the material, cold water is generally a better choice than hot water.

Take your jacket out once the wash cycle finishes. Proceed to air-dry.

Option 2: Washing Your Superdry Gym Jackets By Hand

Like we said earlier, you always want to start by removing any surface stains. Once you’ve done that, you can prep the gym jacket by emptying the pockets and zippering up the zippers.

The next step is to draw your bath. Fill a washbasin with tepid water and stir in half a scoop of ACTIVE detergent so that it’s fully dissolved. Place your gym jacket in the solution once it’s sudsy. Make sure that the entire garment is submerged by pressing down on it with your hands.

Leave it in the washbasin to soak for at least 15 minutes. Afterward, give the material a rub with your fingers to remove any remaining oils and dirt. Rinse thoroughly with water afterward; there shouldn’t be any ACTIVE detergent leftover (you can tell if there are soap suds coming out of the fabric). Once the water comes out clear, you can transfer the jacket elsewhere to air dry. We recommend hanging it up on a clothesline to air dry. Remember, it’s best not to use the dryer.

How to Clean Your Superdry Swimsuits

Superdry swimsuits should never be put in the washing machine; they should always be washed by hand.

First things first, give it a thorough rinse once you’ve taken it off—that will help remove some of the chlorine and salts that are on the fabric. Once you’ve done that, put it in a bowl or basin and fill it with cool water. Add half a scoop of ACTIVE detergent. Make sure that the swimsuit is fully immersed and wave it around to help work in the soap. Afterward, let it soak for at least 20 minutes.

Rinse the swimsuit thoroughly afterward; you’ll have to massage the fabric with your hands to remove the soap suds. Continue to rinse until the material is no longer soapy and lay it flat to dry. Never should you put a swimsuit in the dryer; the heat will distort and stretch out the elastic fibers, which will ruin its fit.
