How to Wash Onzie Activewear

April 17, 2022

Onzie is a women-run brand that specializes in yoga and workout apparel. With the current pandemic, they’ve also started selling performance masks made of up-cycled materials. Not only that, but they also offer accessories such as tote bags and more.

More About Onzie

Onzie was launched in 2010. Based in Venice Beach, California, the company prides themselves on offering high-quality yoga wear that’s comfortable in heavy sweat environments. Their pieces are also designed with Free-Flow Fabric Technology, which makes them breathable, functional, and fashionable.

While they don’t have a brick-and-mortar shop, their products can be found at many retailers including Nordstrom. Also, for those who are wondering, they do offer international shipping if you order from their site. In fact, it’s free if you purchase over $250.

What Kind of Workout Gear Do They Sell?

Onzie offers a variety of activewear for women including leggings, sports bras, tank tops, long sleeves, and shorts. They also have their own line of swimwear, which includes one-pieces and bikinis.

And for those who are wondering, their prices are comparable to that of other activewear brands. For example, you can get a tank top for about $40 and a pair of leggings for $70. They also have a sale section where you can purchase discounted items. Shipping is also free across the U.S. for orders over $75.

Taking Care of Onzie Yoga and Workout Apparel

Want your Onzie products to last? Then make sure to take proper care of them- that’ll prevent them from wearing out prematurely. For one thing, it’s highly recommended that you wash your gear right away after working out; you don’t want the sweat to remain on the fabric as it can degrade the fibers.

Don’t just throw your tops and bottoms into the washer, though. Read the care tag label. It’s important that you follow the proper instructions, otherwise, you can do more harm than good.

Fabrics Used By Onzie

What dictates how an item should be washed? The fabric. That is, different materials have different properties, which require different washing methods. Let’s take a look at some of the ones used by Onzie.

Polyester

Polyester is a man-made fabric that’s often used for clothing, especially workout gear. Not only is it soft and lightweight, but it’s also resistant to wrinkles, abrasion, and moisture. Plus, it has moisture-wicking properties (i.e. it’ll pull sweat away from your body).

Spandex

Spandex is known for its exceptional elasticity. Unlike other materials, however, it can’t be woven alone. Instead, it’s combined with other materials such as cotton or polyester. Light and versatile, it’s a good choice for leggings and other form-fitting garments.

Rayon

Rayon is a semi-synthetic material that’s created from wood pulp. More specifically, it’s made from cellulose fibers. Similar to silk, it’s soft, comfortable, and breathable. It also blends well with other fabrics such as polyester and spandex.

Nylon

Nylon is another synthetic material that’s often used for activewear. Similar to spandex, it has great elastic properties. Not only that, but it also has excellent abrasion and wear resistance. On top of that, it’s cost-effective. This is one of the many reasons why it’s so popular for clothing.

The Best Way to Wash Your Onzie Leggings

how to wash onzie leggings

Most, if not all of their leggings are made from a polyester/spandex blend. What that means is that they’re 100% machine washable. And if you, you can wash them by hand as well. We’ll be going over both methods below.

Option 1: Using the Washing Machine For Your Onzie Leggings

As with all bottoms, you want to start by turning the leggings inside out. That’ll keep them looking new longer (i.e. the inner layer will take the abuse instead of the outside layer). It’s also a good idea to use a laundry bag as it’ll add another layer of protection- this is especially true if you’re washing it with other garments.

Put your leggings in the washer (remember to separate lights from darks if you’re washing a mixed load). The next step is to add one scoop of ACTIVE detergent. Depending on your machine, you either want to pour it into the dispenser or drum. Skip the softener- it’ll leave an icky residue on your leggings.

Set your washing machine to run a cold water cycle on a gentle setting with little to no spin and allow it to do its thing. Retrieve your leggings once the cycle is complete. Don’t leave the items inside for longer than necessary- the moist environment can breed bacteria.

Carefully hang them up and let them air dry in a well-ventilated room away from sunlight. Drying with the dryer is not recommended as the heat can damage polyester/spandex fibers.

Option 2: Washing Your Onzie Leggings In the Sink

First things first, prepare the sink. Fill it with warm (not hot) water and add in 1/2 a scoop of ACTIVE detergent. Swish it with your hand to dissolve the powder. Once it’s combined, place your leggings into the sink. The entire item should be submerged in the soapy water. This is important as you want the detergent to penetrate into the fibers.

Leave your leggings in the sink for at least 15 minutes. Rinse them with water thoroughly afterward. You can either refill the sink with clean water or hold them under the faucet. Either way, you want to rinse the item until there’s no more soap residue.

Blot away the excess moisture by using a clean towel (we recommend rolling up the leggings in the towel). Never twist or wring the leggings with your hands- that will stretch out the fibers. Also, like we said earlier, you want to skip the dryer. Opt for air-drying instead. Just keep the leggings away from sunlight as the sun’s rays can cause the fabric to break down over time.

Washing Onzie Sports Bras the Proper Way

Sports bra are more delicate than other activewear. For this reason, you want to be extra careful when you’re washing them.

Option 1: Machine Washing Your Onzie Sports Bra With Other Activewear

You can wash their sports bras with their leggings given that they’re of similar colors. Start by fastening all hooks and claps- that way, they don’t catch on your other garments. Once you’ve done that, pop them in a laundry bag; that will protect them from friction damage during the cycle.

Place the lingerie bag inside the washing machine. Add the rest of your activewear and set your washing machine to a gentle or delicate cycle. Make sure to use cold water as hot water can damage the sports bras’ synthetic fabrics. Skip the fabric conditioner.

Run the washer and wait for it to come to a stop before retrieving your sports bra. Take it out of the laundry bag and hang it somewhere so that it can dry naturally. Remember, you don’t want to use the dryer for activewear.

Option 2: Hand Washing Your Onzie Sports Bra

Bring your Onzie sports bra to the sink. Fill it up with tepid water and mix in 1/2 a scoop of ACTIVE detergent. Gently swish the water to help dissolve the powder. Once it’s mixed, place your sports bra in. Ensure that the garment is completely submerged in the water.

Leave it in the sink for about 15 minutes- that will give the soap time to do its thing. Afterward, rinse it with water. You can gently massage the fabric with your hand- that’ll help get rid of any dirt that’s on the item.

Continue to rinse the item until all of the soap is gone. This can take a couple of minutes depending on how much detergent it has absorbed. Once you’re finished, place the sports bra on a clean towel; use it to blot away the excess water before hanging it up to dry. Like we said earlier, the dryer is a no-no.

How to Wash Onzie Swimsuits Properly

Swimsuits are similar to sports bras in that they also fall into the delicate category. There’s just one difference- they’re not machinable washable (the agitation can easily wear down the fibers); you have to wash them by hand.

Washing Your Onzie One-Pieces and Bikinis By Hand

Rinse your swimsuit with cool water as soon as possible. If you can, let it soak for about 20-30 minutes- that’s even better for the fabric; it’ll remove most of the body oil, salt, or chlorine from the material.

Prepare a sink. Fill it with cool tap water and add in half a scoop or less of ACTIVE detergent. Make sure that the powder is properly dissolved by swishing the water with your hand. Turn your swimsuit inside out and place it in the sink- the entire thing should be submerged in the solution. Swish it for a few minutes and let it sit for another 15 minutes.

Rinse well with cold water afterward. Remove the swimsuit from the sink and gently squeeze out the excess water. Never wring the suit as that can stretch out and damage the fabric.

Air dry your swimsuit by laying it flat in a spot out of direct sunlight.

The Best Detergent For Onzie Yoga and Workout Apparel

Active detergent is specifically formulated for synthetic fabrics such as polyester and spandex. Instead of just washing over the trapped gunk, it’ll physically break down and dissolve the sweat and oil that’s trapped inside the fibers with enzymes.

Active packaging

That way, your workout clothes will smell fresher and last longer. The best part is that the formula is 100% natural. It does not contain any artificial fragrances or fillers- everything is plant-based. This makes it ideal for those with sensitive skin. It’s also a good choice for those who are looking for a more eco-friendly detergent.
