Boohoo was founded by Carol Kane and Mahmud Kamani in 2006. Within a year, the company had launched printed campaigns. While their headquarters are located in Manchester, they ship worldwide to over 100 countries.

Why is Boohoo so popular? Their prices are competitive; we’re talking about less than $30 for an item. Take their cycling shorts, for instance—you can get a pair for $12! Now that’s a steal. From time to time, they also have sales, which brings down the prices even further! As a matter of fact, they have a “50% off everything” sale at the time of this writing.

Caring For Boohoo Activewear

As with all workout clothes, their activewear should be washed after every gym session. The last thing that you want is for your sweat to stay in the fabric! Not only will it smell bad (due to the growth of odor-causing bacteria), but the fibers will break down as well. You wouldn’t want your pair of shorts or leggings to wear down after just a few wears, would you?

That’s why it’s so important to wash everything with detergent—it keeps your activewear fresh and clean. Try not to just toss everything in the machine, though. As it turns out, there are certain steps that you want to take when you’re washing these types of clothes. Need some tips? Then be sure to read the rest of the post!

Fabrics Used by Boohoo

Now you might be wondering, “why is it important to know what types of fabrics they use”? The answer is—it determines how an item should be washed. Remember, different fibers have different properties, which calls for different washing methods.

Here are some of the fabrics used by Boohoo:

Elastane is sometimes called spandex (both terms refer to the same type of fiber). Prized for its exceptional elasticity, the fabric is not only strong but durable as well—much more so than rubber. To give you a better idea, elastane can be stretched seven times its length; let go and it’ll quickly return to its original size. For this reason, it’s often used in clothing to provide stretch, especially activewear.

Boohoo uses elastane for their leggings, sports bras, cropped hoodies, cycling shorts, and more.

Viscose, also known as rayon, is a type of semi-synthetic fabric. Made from cellulose fibers, it is similar to cotton in that it is breathable and light. Often compared to silk, it is soft, robust, and drapes well. Not only that, but it’s inexpensive. Given that, it’s not surprising to know that it’s used for clothing, particularly activewear. With that said, it tends to wrinkle easily. There’s also a chance that the fibers will shrink when they’re washed.

Boohoo uses viscose for their cycling shorts.

Polyester is a type of fabric that’s made from polymer chains. Hydrophobic, it does not absorb sweat. In fact, it’s moisture-wicking, which means that moisture will be brought to the surface where it can evaporate (i.e. you won’t get that warm, clammy feeling). Strong and robust, it is resistant to mildew, abrasions, wrinkles, shrinking, stretching, and most chemicals.

Boohoo uses polyester for their cropped hoodies, cropped tees, leggings, joggers, and more.

Polyamide is a general term for fibers that are made from polyamide monomers. For instance, nylon falls into this category. Not only is it soft and flexible, but it’s durable as well—more so than polyester. On top of that, polyamides are wrinkle- and stain-resistant. In other words, they’re easy to care for. This is one of the reasons why they’re so great for clothing.

How to Wash Boohoo Leggings/Yoga Pants/Tights

Now that we’re more familiar with their fabrics, let’s take a look at how to wash Boohoo products. First off—their leggings. We mentioned this earlier, but it’s probably best to wash them right after you get home from the gym. Try not to leave them in the hamper for days in a row!

Are Boohoo Leggings and Tights Machine Washable?

Most if not all of Boohoo’s leggings are made from a type of polyester blend. Ultimately, what this means is that it’s perfectly fine for you to put them in the washing machine. If anything, that’s probably the easiest way to clean them!

The first thing that you want to do is to sort your leggings by color (assuming that you’re washing more than one pair). Generally speaking, you want to have one pile for dark colors and another for light colors. The key is to wash them separately—otherwise, you’ll run into problems with the dyes.

Once you’ve got your pile of dirty leggings, turn them inside out—that will help to prevent the colors from fading (which, as you can imagine, can be quite a frustrating issue). If possible, place each of them in their own mesh laundry bag. The bag will serve as a barrier—that is, it will protect your leggings from your other clothes (if you’re washing them with other items). A pillowcase can be used as an alternative if you don’t have a mesh bag.

Put your leggings in the washing machine. From there, you want to fill the soap dispenser—a scoop of ACTIVE detergent will do unless you’re washing a large load. Next, you want to set the settings. As a general rule, you should always wash their leggings with cold water (there’s always a possibility that hot water will deform the fabric). In addition to that, you want to select a delicate cycle—that will minimize the amount of agitation in the washer, which is better for your leggings in the long run.

Note: Boohoo leggings come with a moisture-wicking finish. For this reason, you do not want to use fabric softeners. Consider using vinegar as a softening agent instead.

Press the start button and wait for the washer to do its thing. Take the leggings out once the cycle is finished. Allow them to dry naturally on a drying rack or clothesline. Don’t use the dryer—the heat can weaken the fabric. You wouldn’t want your leggings to become see-through now, would you? Also, it’s a bad idea to put them out in the sun—that can also damage the fibers.

Washing Boohoo Leggings and Tights by Hand

Leggings, in general, are easy to wash by hand. Start by filling a basin or sink with lukewarm water (approx. half full). Mix in a scoop of ACTIVE detergent—you should eventually see soap suds. From there, place your Boohoo leggings in. Make sure that the entire item is in the detergent solution. You can do this by swirling it in the sink a few times.

Allow it to soak for at least 20 minutes. Swirl it again a few times before picking it up. If you want, you can gently massage the fabric to get rid of any body oils or sweat that might be leftover. Next, rinse the soap film off by placing the leggings under the faucet. You can also refill the sink with clean water and do it that way.

Pro-tip: You can remove stains by applying ACTIVE detergent directly onto the spot (you’ll have to dissolve it in water first). Let it soak through for 30 minutes before rinsing it off. Repeat if necessary.

Once the detergent is gone (i.e. the water comes out clear), place the leggings on a clean towel. Roll them up to remove some of the excess moisture. Never twist the fabric like a rag as that will damage its elasticity. Hang them up on a clothesline afterwards and let them dry naturally. Avoid the tumble dryer. Do not put the leggings under direct sunlight.

Washing Instructions for Boohoo Sports Bras

Boohoo offers various styles of sports bras for women. Despite their differences in appearance, however, they can all be washed the same way.

Putting Boohoo Sports Bras in the Washer

First things first—determine whether or not the pads are removable. If they are, take them out so that you can wash them separately. Next, you want to turn the item inside out. From there, place the sports bra in a lingerie bag. If anything, that’s one of the best things that you can do to preserve its shape! Remember, sports bras are considered to be delicate—so you want to give them a little extra care.

Note: You can wash sports bras with other activewear as long as you’ve separated everything based on color.

Put the lingerie bag in the washer. Afterwards, set the settings—you want to wash them with a cold, gentle cycle (minimal agitation). Press start and let the washing machine run. As with their leggings, you want to skip on the fabric softeners.

Take the bags out of the washer once the cycle’s complete. Remove the sports bras and let them dry on a drying rack. Do not hang them by their straps as that can cause damage to the elastic! Putting them in the dryer is another no-no.

Washing Boohoo Sports Bras by Hand

Sports bras are easy to wash by hand, given their size. As always, you want to begin by filling the sink with water. From there, put in a small amount of ACTIVE detergent to create a soapy mixture. Place your sports bra in and let it submerge in the liquid. Allow it to sit for 15 to 20 minutes in the sink.

Pick up the sports bra after swirling it a few times with your hands. Rinse it with water to get rid of the soap film—continue until the water becomes clear. Place it on a towel and use it to soak up the excess moisture. Never wring or twist the sports bra like a rag—that’s one of the easiest ways to ruin the material! Afterwards, allow it to air dry on a clothesline or drying rack.

The Safest Way to Clean Boohoo Swimwear

When it comes to swimsuits, you always want to wash it after every single wear. After all, sweat, sunscreen, and chlorine can all degrade the fabric. Ideally, the first thing that you want to do after getting out of the water is to give it a good rinse. You can even shower with it on—anything is better than just leaving it alone!

For the best results, skip the washing machine. Instead, wash it by hand. Fill a container with cold water and add a small amount of ACTIVE detergent. Never use hot water as it can damage the swimsuit’s delicate fibers. Place the garment in and let it soak in the solution for 20 to 30 minutes. Afterwards, rinse off the film of soap with cool water.

Place it on a clean towel and roll it up—that will help to press out the excess water. Remember to never twist or wring your swimsuit. Lay it flat to dry when you’re done. Never tumble dry.
