Caring For Your Just My Size Leggings

There are a few things that you want to do if you want your JMS leggings to last. For one thing, you want to be diligent about washing them. Don’t leave them in a pile on the floor or in the hamper—you don’t want the sweat on the fabric to stay on the fabric. Aside from smelling, it can also compromise the fabric.

What you want to do instead is put them in the wash right away. Just make sure to do it correctly, otherwise, you might do more harm than good. And if you don’t have time to wash the leggings, at least air them out.

Fabrics Used For Just My Size Leggings

Polyester

Polyester is commonly used for leggings, jackets, and other activewear. Man-made, it is much more resilient compared to cotton and other natural fibers. Not only is it water-resistant, but it’s also abrasion-resistant. In other words, it’s not as likely to wear away due to friction or rubbing.

Elastane

Elastane goes by another name—spandex. Similar to polyester, it is also man-made. Property-Wise, however, it is quite different. That is, it’s extremely elastic (thus its name). Because of this, it’s often the fabric of choice for skin-tight garments. Having said that, it’s almost never used by itself. Instead, it’s usually blended with other fibers, which is the case for their leggings.

Tencel

Tencel is often compared to rayon as it’s also made of regenerated cellulose fibers. Environmentally friendly, it can be combined with a wide range of fibers including polyester and cotton. Not only is it gentle on the skin, but it’s also breathable and silky soft.

Organic Cotton

Cotton is probably the most common fabric that’s used for clothing. In addition to being soft, it’s also breathable, and absorbent. When it comes to activewear such as leggings, it’s often blended with synthetic fibers such as nylon to add a bit of durability. The only thing about it is that it has a tendency of shrinking if exposed to high temperatures.

The Best Way to Wash Just My Size Leggings

The great thing about JMS leggings is that they’re machine washable. Just pop them in with the rest of your activewear and they’ll come out looking like new. Alternatively, you can wash manually by hand—all you need is some detergent and water.

* You can wash their panty hose and knee-high socks the same way as their leggings

Machine Washing JMS Leggings

Turn the leggings/tights inside out so that the inner layer is on the outside. Next, put them in a laundry bag—it’ll protect the item from friction damage, which can shorten its lifespan. Not only that, but it’ll also keep them separate from the rest of your clothes (you can wash JMS leggings with other activewear as long as you’ve sorted out the colors and aren’t mixing darks with lights).

using a mesh laundry bag

Zip up the bag so that the leggings are secure and put it in the washing machine. Once you’ve done that, add one scoop of ACTIVE detergent. It’s important that you don’t add too much, otherwise, it’ll trap in the dirt and oils, which will make the item harder to clean. Also, avoid fabric softeners—they’ll affect the fabric’s finish.

Tip: White vinegar can be used instead if you want to soften your tights or leggings. Just pour ½ to 1 cup into the washing machine during the rinse cycle.

Once the detergent is in, set the machine to a gentle cycle, and press the start button. Always use cold water for leggings. Hot water can warp or damage the fabric.

Allow the washer to complete the cycle before opening the door and taking out your leggings. Do not transfer them to the dryer. Consider using a drying rack instead, ideally in a well-ventilated room. Don’t leave them outside as the sun’s rays can fade the dyes.

Hand Washing JMS Leggings

All you need is your leggings, water, detergent, and a container that’s large enough to hold the item (we recommend using a sink or washtub). Fill it with water, about three-quarters full, and add one scoop of ACTIVE detergent. Wait for the powder to dissolve completely before putting your leggings in (you can always speed things up by agitating the water with your hands).

Pro-tip: Consider adding one cup of white vinegar to the mixture if odor is an issue. It’ll automatically neutralize any smells. Baking soda works as well. For the best results, add half a cup with the detergent and another half a cup during the rinse cycle.

deodorizing with baking soda

Swirl the leggings through the soapy water and let them soak for about 20 minutes. Replace the dirty water with clean water from the tap afterward and use it to rinse the item. You can also rinse them under a stream of water. Continue for a couple of minutes, until the water runs clear.

To get rid of the excess water, press the leggings against the edge of the sink or washtub. From there, place them on a clean towel. Press on them gently with your hands to remove more water.

Finally, hang them up so that they can dry naturally. Don’t tumble dry—the high temperature can affect the leggings’ shape, flexibility, and fit.

Removing Stains From Your Just My Size Leggings

Fill a small bowl with some warm water and add a bit of ACTIVE detergent. Using a soft-bristled brush, apply the mixture onto the stain. Gently rub it in with small, circular motions. Be careful not to spread it out further.

Let the detergent sit on the leggings for a couple of minutes before rinsing it off (consider holding it under a stream of water). Check to see if the stain is gone afterward. If it is, you can proceed to wash the leggings normally, either by hand or by machine. If the stain is still visible, repeat the above steps again.

Never use bleach; it can and will ruin the material. When in doubt, you can always double-check the care tag label on the garment.

What NOT to Do When Washing Your Leggings

  • Don’t throw them directly into the washing machine without using a laundry bag—they’ll get tossed and thrown around during the wash cycle, which can damage the fabric
  • Don’t wash them with hot water—the heat can stretch out the spandex fibers
  • Don’t wash them with coarse items such as jeans or denim jackets—that’ll increase the chances of friction damage
  • Don’t throw them in the dryer
  • Don’t use too much detergent—that can actually cause bacteria build-up (not to mention that it’s also bad for your washer)

The Best Laundry Detergent For Just My Size Leggings

Most, if not all of their leggings (and tights) are made from a nylon blend. Given that, it’s best to use a detergent that’s engineered for these types of fabrics—something like ACTIVE detergent. Unlike traditional detergents, it’s specifically designed to clean synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester, and spandex. That is, it’s capable of diving deep into the fibers to remove dirt, oil, and sweat. Regular detergents, on the other hand, are more geared toward traditional fabrics such as cotton.

What’s more, is that it features an all-natural formula (ie. it doesn’t contain any fillers, artificial fragrances, or preservatives). This makes it suitable for those who are sensitive to certain chemicals. Not only that, but it’ll be better for the environment as well. For one thing, you won’t have to worry about contaminating the waterways with chemical products.

Considering all that, I’d say that it’s worth a try, especially if you have other activewear to wash on a regular basis!
