How to Wash Baseball & Softball Jerseys, Cleats & More

April 30, 2023

Baseball and softball are physically demanding sports that involve a good amount of moving around on the field. Given that, it only makes sense that you’d be covered in sweat and that’s why it’s so important to wash your jersey and other gear regularly.

How to Wash Baseball & Softball Jerseys Properly

Regular washing is key if you want to keep your jersey smelling fresh. Here are two ways you can do that:

Machine Washing Baseball Jerseys

how to wash baseball and softball uniformsThe great thing about jerseys is that they’re machine washable. Start by turning them inside out – that will prevent the logo and colors from fading.

Next, place them in a laundry bag and add them to the washer.

Add one scoop of ACTIVE Laundry Detergent powder to the tub and wash on a delicate setting with cold water. Avoid using hot water as it can cause the fabric to shrink.

Avoid using fabric softener – it will coat your jersey with chemicals and prevent it from pulling sweat from the skin.

Tip: You can add one cup of white vinegar during the final rinse for extra deodorizing power.

Take your baseball jersey out of the machine once the cycle is finished and hang them up on a clothesline so they can air dry. It shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours for them to dry thoroughly.

Avoid putting them in the dryer – the heat will cause the fibers to deteriorate prematurely.

How to Hand Wash Softball Jerseys

baseball jersey washing instructionsYou can hand wash your baseball or softball uniforms in the sink. Start by filling it 3/4 full with cold water. Carefully add one scoop of ACTIVE Detergent and mix the solution with your hand until it becomes bubbly.

Place your jerseys into the solution, making sure all of the fabric is in the liquid. Leave it there to soak for at least 30 minutes.

Pro-tip: You can spot-treat tough stains by applying ACTIVE Detergent directly to the area. Depending on the stain, you may want to let it sit for at least an hour.

Swirl the jersey through the solution and rinse with water afterward. Continue to rinse until the water runs clear and there are no soap suds left.

Transfer your baseball jersey onto a clean surface and use a clean towel to absorb the excess moisture.

Line dry afterward. Do not put them in the dryer.

Best Way to Clean Baseball Cleats

Cleaning the Outside of Your Cleats

how to clean baseball cleatsBefore you begin, knock off the excess dirt, mud, and grass by clapping the shoes together.

Mix a bit of ACTIVE Detergent powder with warm water in a large container. Dampen an old toothbrush with the solution and use it to scrub the surface. You can also add a bit of baking soda for extra cleaning power.

Wipe away the detergent with a clean cloth, soaked in warm water.

If you can, remove the insoles and wash them separately in the washing machine on a cold, delicate cycle.

Removing Scuffs and Stains From Your Baseball Cleats

how to wash baseball and softball uniformsOne of the easiest ways to remove scuff marks is by using an old toothbrush. Dip it into an ACTIVE Detergent-water solution and use it to remove the marks. Try to be as gentle as possible. You might have to repeat this a few times before they disappear. When you’re done, rinse the cleats clean with plain water.

Toothpaste is another alternative. Apply a bit of the product onto your finger and apply it to the scuff marks. You can also use a soft bristle brush to rub it in.

Rinse with clean water afterward. Allow the shoes to dry fully before wearing.

Best Way to Wash Softball Sliding Shorts (Sliders)

Sliding shorts are a special type of shorts that are meant to protect your legs, especially your thighs and glutes, from abrasions when you’re sliding on the ground.

And similar to jerseys, they can get dirty quickly when you’re on the field.

Are Softball Sliding Shorts Machine Washable?

how to wash softball sliding shortsMost sliding shorts are machine washable. Start by flipping them inside out – that will prevent the outer layer from rubbing against your other clothes during the wash cycle.

Next, place them in a mesh laundry bag and throw them in the washer. If you want, you can wash them together with your jerseys.

Add one scoop of ACTIVE Detergent powder to the detergent drawer or tub and run a delicate cycle with cold water. Avoid using bleach or fabric conditioners.

Take your shorts out of the machine once the cycle is finished and let them dry on a drying rack or clothes line. Remember, air drying is always better than using a clothes dryer.

Washing Softball Sliding Shorts by Hand

Fill a large container or sink with water and dissolve one scoop of ACTIVE Detergent powder. Carefully place your shorts in once it’s thoroughly mixed, making sure not to overload the basin.

Let them sit and soak in the solution for at least 20 minutes.

Swirl the shorts a few times in the solution before massaging the fabric with your hands.

Rinse them with clean water afterward. You can do this by placing them under running water. Continue to rinse until the fabric is free of detergent.

Transfer the sliding shorts onto a clean towel afterward and use it to absorb the extra water. Line dry afterward. Keep in mind, however, that it might take a little longer if your shorts come with padding.

How to Clean Your Softball Helmet

how to clean baseball and softball helmetsSoftball helmets can develop odors over time, which is why you want to clean them regularly (not necessarily after every game).

The first step is to check whether or not it has removable liners. If it does, take them off so that you can wash them separately. For example, you can put them in the washing machine (in a laundry bag) or soak them in the sink with soap.

As for the actual helmet, you can apply an anti-bacterial spray after wiping it down with water. Don’t forget to clean the face guard as well, if it comes with one. Dry the surface with a clean cloth afterward.

How to Wash Baseball Jersey – FAQs

What’s the best way to remove grass stains from a jersey?

We recommend spot-treating the stain with ACTIVE Detergent. Dissolve a bit of the powder in some warm water and apply the solution to the problem area. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes before rinsing with water.

Can you wash baseball jerseys with hockey jerseys?

Yes, you can put them in the same load as long as you’re not mixing light colors with dark colors. For the best results, place them in their own laundry bags.

What setting should you use when machine washing?

It’s best to use a gentle cycle with cold water – that will prevent your baseball gear from wearing out prematurely.
