Tips to Clean & Remove Odors from Crocs Loafers

November 26, 2020

Crocs is an American company that’s known for their foam clog shoes. With that said, they also sell other types of footwear such as sandals, slides, boots, flip-flops, wedges, sneakers, loafers, and more. One thing that’s unique about the brand is that you can customize their shoes with Jibbitz shoe charms.

More About Crocs

The company was founded by George Boedecker Jr. and Lyndon Hanson in 2002. Working together, they developed a foam clog that quickly proved to be popular. Securing the rights to the proprietary foam resin, they officially registered the name “Crocs” in 2007. Nowadays, there are more than 100 retail stores worldwide.

On top of that, their shoes can also be found at various retailers such as Kohl’s, Walmart, Macy, and more.

Interesting Fact: Crocs has a philanthropy division called Crocs Cares, which strives to help families, animals, and the environment. Over the years, they’ve conducted multiple volunteer initiatives including a partnership with Boulder County’s Open Space Program.

More About Crocs Shoes

Crocs are available in a variety of styles, as mentioned earlier. Aside from their classic shoes, they also have other collections such as LiteRide, Swimwater, All-Terrain, Santa Cruz, and Brooklyn. On top of that, they offer Clogs with various character designs for children. For example, they have a line that features different Disney characters.

One great thing about Crocs is that they’re affordable. For instance, you can get a pair of classic clogs for under $50—sometimes even lower if you can catch them on sale. Some of their other shoes, such as their loafers, might be a tad more expensive, but the difference really isn’t all that significant.

Taking Care of Crocs

Their shoes can get dirty with regular wear. The good news is that the foam material that they use is very easy to clean. For one thing, many of them are waterproof. This means that you can easily wash and rinse them off with water.

Some collections, such as their loafers, however, are made from canvas. In other words, they can get dirty more easily (i.e. the material can absorb dirt and mud). That’s why you want to be careful when you’re wearing them. For instance, it’s probably best not to wear them on a rainy day.

With that said, it is possible to clean them if they get dirty—you just have to act fast. The longer you wait, the more the mud will be soaked into the canvas material.

Got your Crocs Loafers dirty? Not sure how you should clean them? Well, it’s a good thing you found this post because that’s what we’ll be talking about below—so make sure to read until the end!

Materials Used By Crocs

Crocs use various materials for their shoes, including their proprietary resin material. Let’s take a closer look before we delve into the washing instructions.

Croslite Material

Most of their shoes, including their molded clogs, are made from Croslite material. Not only does it absorb impact, but it also provides maximum cushioning. The classic clogs also do not contain any latex, though other styles may contain latex in the glue or other bonding materials.

Canvas Material

Their loafers are made from heavy-duty canvas material. Aside from being sturdy, it also offers excellent breathability so that your feet can breathe even on the hottest of days. The midsole, however, is made from their signature Croslite material. As for the outsole, it’s made from rubber, which provides both durability and traction.

LiteRide Material

LiteRide is a new material that’s even more comfortable than their original technology—that is, it’s 40% softer and 25% lighter than Croslite. At the same time, it provides the same amount of support and shock absorption. LiteRide is currently incorporated into multiple styles including flip-flops, sneakers, and platform sandals.

Matlite Material

Some of their sandals come with straps that are made from Matlite material. Soft and flexible, it makes the shoes incredibly easy to wear.

Washing Instructions for Crocs Loafers

Do you have a pair of Crocs loafers that need washing? You’ll be surprised just how easy it is! Follow the instructions below and they’ll be clean in no time. Remember, you always want to clean them as soon as possible—don’t let the canvas material soak in the mud!

Can You Put a Pair of Crocs Loafers in the Washing Machine?

Don’t be afraid to use your washing machine. After all, the canvas is made from cotton and cotton clothes do just fine in the washer. Before you throw them in, though, clean off all the dirt that’s on the soles of the shoes. You can do this in a number of ways. For example, you can scrub the bottom with a soft-bristled brush. Clapping the soles together might also help to get rid of any crusty mud.

Place the loafers in a laundry bag (make sure that it’s big enough) and put them in the machine. Avoid washing them with your clothes as they can get damaged. Instead, throw in a few old towels—that’ll ensure that they won’t bang around too much when you’re running the cycle.

Next, set the settings. For the best results, use cold water. Remember, the canvas is made from cotton and cotton can shrink if exposed to high temperatures. Similarly, you want to use a delicate setting as it’ll be gentler on the fabric. Once you’ve done that, add a scoop of ACTIVE detergent. Press the start button and let the machine work its magic.

Remove the loafers once the wash cycle is complete. Take them out of the laundry bag and let them air dry at room temperature. Never place them in the dryer. The heat can shrink the canvas material not to mention that it can also melt the adhesives. For the same reason, you don’t want to put them under direct sunlight.

Washing Your Pair of Crocs Loafers By Hand

Don’t want to use the washing machine? You’ll be happy to know that hand washing is also an option! Start by removing any loose dirt and dust from the shoes. The best way to do this is to use a scrub brush—continue until the loafers are free from debris.

Next, you want to create a soapy solution. Fill a bucket or tub with warm water and add in a scoop of ACTIVE detergent—that’s going to be your soap. Put your hand in and swirl the water around to dissolve the powder. Once that’s done, dip your brush into the mixture. From there, you can use it to scrub the outside of the loafers (you can scrub the soles as well).

Afterward, rinse the shoes with water—continue until there’s no remaining soap. Depending on how dirty they are, it might be easier to just submerge them in the bucket (if that’s the case, leave them in for 15-20 minutes).

As far as the soles go, you can use a magic eraser to scrub away any marks. It works great—just be careful not to get it on the canvas part of the shoes! When you’re finished, blot the canvas material with a clean towel. Proceed to set them in a well-ventilated area so that they can air dry. Like we said earlier, you do not want to put them in the clothes dryer. Direct sunlight should also be avoided.

How to Remove Odors from Crocs Loafers

Are your Crocs loafers smelly? That’s not too surprising, especially if you wear them regularly. Don’t fret, though—there’s more than one way that you can get the smell out!

deodorizing crocs loafers

1. Wipe the Shoe with White Vinegar

White vinegar is great for many things—deodorizing shoes being one of them. It’s simple to use too. All you have to do is wet a cloth with the vinegar (you don’t have to dilute it). From there, you can use it to wipe the inside of the shoe. No rinsing needed! You can just let it air dry. The “vinegar scent” will dissipate naturally as well. If necessary, you can speed up the drying process by stuffing the loafers with some newspaper. Do not use other types of vinegar (e.g. balsamic vinegar, apple vinegar) as it can discolor your loafers.

Note: You can always soak your loafers in a white vinegar/water solution if they’re excessively dirty.

2. Pour Some Baking Soda In

Baking soda is another natural cleaner that you can use for your shoes. Pour a bit of the powder into the loafers and leave them in for several hours (overnight is best). Remove the baking soda in the morning—the smell will be gone by them! If you don’t want to get the insides dirty, you can always put the power in a plastic bag. It’ll be just as effective.

3. Slip In Some Dryer Sheets

Dryer sheets are not just for the dryer. As it turns out, you can stuff them in your shoes as well! Take the sheets out the next morning and your loafers will be fresh. Note- for the best results, use scented dryer sheets (unscented sheets still work but they won’t be as effective).

4. Rub the Inside with Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is another option. Pour a bit onto a clean cloth and use it to wipe the inside of your loafers (just like vinegar). The alcohol content will be enough to kill any odor-causing bacteria that are on your shoe. The best part is that it’ll dry quickly afterward!

5. Put Them in the Freezer

As a last resort, you can place your loafers in the freezer. The cold temperature will zap any bacteria that’s on the shoe so that it’ll smell fresh again. For this method, it’s highly recommended that you put your loafers in a plastic bag first.
