Disposing of Cloths

When a dishcloth reaches the end of its lifespan, it can be composted.

The natural blend of cellulose and cotton materials will biodegrade in as little as 8 weeks* under ideal conditions.

A warm, damp environment with sufficient oxygen and diverse microbial activity helps improve biodegradability.

These environmental factors can influence how long it takes the cloth to degrade.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Swedish dishcloths are durable cleaning cloths with many different uses. They are a spongy, reusable alternative to traditional paper towels.

Each cloth is made from a blend of natural materials – 70% cotton and 30% cellulose. This blend creates a sturdy and absorbent cloth that can take the place of paper towels, standard kitchen sponges, and dish towels.

Our dishcloths are safe to use on any surfaces including:

  • Countertops
  • Appliances
  • Dishes & Kitchenware
  • Glass
  • Mirrors & Windows
  • Marble & Stone
  • Wood
  • Tile & More

Between uses, we recommend thoroughly rinsing the cloth, wringing it out, then hanging it to dry.

To fully wash these dishcloths, there are 3 different methods that you can use:

Washing Machine: To clean in a washing machine, run the cloths on a gentle wash cycle with similar colors. Do not use bleach or fabric softeners.

Dishwasher: You can put Swedish dishcloths on the top rack and run them with your dishes on a normal wash cycle.

Boil/Microwave: Boil a pot of water and place the cloth inside. Or you can pour a bowl of water and place the cloth in it, then microwave. We recommend boiling or microwaving the cloth for about 3 minutes.

The best way to prevent odors from forming on Swedish dishcloths is to rinse them, wring them out, and hang them up to dry between uses. You can hang them over your faucet spout, the edge of your sink, or on a sink caddy.

Although Swedish dishcloths dry quickly and have some natural odor-resistant properties, leaving them wet between uses can cause odors.

Yes! The 70% cotton 30% cellulose materials are biodegradable in as little as 8 weeks* in an ideal environment.

Environmental conditions play a large factor in how quickly the dishcloths will biodegrade.

For composting, warm, moist areas with adequate oxygen supply can help improve the biodegradability. The existing microbial environment in your compost can also affect how quickly the cloth breaks down.
